German-Bulgarian Author Iliya Troyanov: Bulgaria Is Still Living the Past
Bulgaria has the worst track record in Eastern Europe in dealing with its communist past, according to the renown German writer of Bulgarian origin, Iliya Troyanov (German spelling: Ilija Trojanow).
In an interview for Novinite.com, Troyanov declared that there was a clear link between reassessing the past and starting a new future, and that Bulgaria still had not taken the first step in that direction.
In his words, the old communist regime nomenclature had turned into a new oligarchy and mafia.
Troyanov also pointed out that contemporary Bulgaria was lacking the understanding that education and culture were central to development that Bulgarian fighters against Ottoman rule had back in the past.
Iliya Troyanov was in Sofia for the presentation of the Bulgarian edition of his book "Nomad on Four Continents", which is published by Ciela Soft & Publishing Jsc.

NELLIE,the German State television had had a loooooooooooooooong interview
with Iliya Troyanov.
Like me he left Bulgaria many, many years ago, living MAINLY in Germany but he
lived also in India,South Africa and who knows where else.
He writes his travelling guides in GERMAN...
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO...WHAT DOES ILIYA TROYANOV KNOW ABOUT BULGARIA?
NOTHING! EXACTLY AS ME!
What could someone posibly know about a country, which s/he visits from time to
time JUST AS A TOURIST!
I DID NOT LIKE HIM WHEN I WATCHED HIM ON THE GERMAN TV...
HE BECAME AS ARROGANT AS MOST WESTERN EUROPEANS!
At least I am honest and say:"I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT
CONTEMPORARY BG AS I DO NOT LIVE THERE AT PRESENT!"
Who hives him the right to proclaime himself as a judge on BG affairs?!
Thanks for the info. This guy is not the kind of writer I would like. I like Graham Greene, Somerset Maugham, Edith Wharton, Jane Austen, Wilkie Collins, Oscar Wilde, and all the elegant Victorian writers. English writers in general have a much more elegant style and rich vocabulary compared to American writers.
"Trojanow was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1965. In 1971 his family fled Bulgaria through Yugoslavia and Italy to Germany, where it received political asylum. In 1972 the family travelled on to Kenya, where Ilija's father had obtained a job as engineer..." Wikipedia...
Now you can't say you know nothing about this German-Bulgarian writer and maybe will refrain from making flippant remarks about someone who has similar background and life experiences like you--as you have stated.
Writing elegantly is far from suitable for writing about harsh reality.
There is a list of his works. Why don't try and read something from him and be the judge regarding his German?

I know nothing about this German-Bulgarian writer, but I doubt his writing style is as elegant as our Bill. The best writer for my money is the German-American writer Bill on this forum. What a wordsmith he is! I miss the old boy. He has such a refined vocabulary and turn of phrase, such an exquisite writing style. I feel so guilty now for teasing him. I was such a b!tch to him.
Very honestly expressed opinion. By the tone of the synopsis of the interview one gets the impression that the author of it does not approve of Mr. Ilya Troyanov's straight and forward condemnation of today's state of affairs in BG. Guess, one can always blame the symptoms rather than the causes for the failures of the country. It is so much less painful...
Congratulations to Ilya Troyanov!
